In spite of the added cost, the popularity of over-the-range microwave ovens has surged in recent years. The primary reason for this growth is that these microwave ovens eliminate the unwanted clutter created by countertop models. Usually anchored to a cabinet over a cooktop or range, these microwaves do more than simply provide a place to quickly cook and reheat food. They also incorporate the important kitchen functions of ventilation and cooking surface lighting. Although the pricing may vary, most over-the-range microwave ovens perform these basic and necessary kitchen tasks well. Typically they all cook, reheat, provide lighting and offer at least minimal ventilation for the kitchen. Very little differentiates one product from another, except for those offering convection and/or a sensor.

Recently the heightened interest in commercially influenced cooking appliances has begun to affect what is offered in the category of over-the-range microwave ovens. As more and more consumers select high-output, oversized gas cooktops and ranges, microwave oven manufacturers have had to scramble to come up with models to use over them. The result is a number of over-the-range microwave ovens with particularly innovative features. Among them are new models that measure 36 inches in width, instead of the usual 30 inches. At least one manufacturer has found a way to vastly increase the ventilation capability of these models for use over burners with outputs in excess of 15,000 Btu. Still other manufacturers have unveiled units with unique door designs, browning trays, nonstick interiors and unusual exterior configurations. Take a look at the recently reviewed models below; each one brings something new and exciting to this popular category.

KitchenAid KHMS2056S

Offered in the hard-to-find 36-inch size, the exterior design of KitchenAid's KHMS2056S is so innovative, it's like no other over-the-range microwave. Unfortunately, the innovation of this beauty is only skin deep. Although basic cooking and reheating in this oven are acceptable, we find some of the features to be disappointing. The browning tray adds cost to the microwave and is intended for tasks that are just better accomplished on the range or in the oven. The sensor has the ability to heat food accurately, but it's difficult and confusing to use. We do appreciate the nonstick interior and bright lights that illuminate the cooktop surface. Ventilation on this model is promoted to be powerful enough for use over gas, but it offers just the usual industry standard of 300 CFM (cubic feet per minute). You'll love the look, the interior and the light, but end up wondering why you paid so much to stash away the browning tray and ponder over the sensor.

Kenmore Elite 63763

Priced right and loaded with the best of features, the Kenmore Elite 63763 eliminates the frills and gives you all the stuff you really need. The 1200 watts makes it fast, the 2.0 cubic feet make it roomy and the sensor makes this microwave accurate. A 36-inch model, it works well over the larger size ranges and cooktops that are growing in popularity. Little extras include a melt/soften feature, which is ideal for chocolate, butter and cream cheese. The standard bulbs are sufficient, but halogen would be so much better. This model deserves our Best Buy rating.

Bosch HMV9303

The Bosch HMV9303 comes in a new, warm titanium finish. It makes a great choice for kitchens in warm hues where stainless steel just won't do. The features are pretty standard and include a sensor. Dual lights are a nice upgrade from the standard single bulb. Priced competitively for a 30-inch model, this unit is also manufactured in black, stainless steel and white. The HMV9303 is designed to complement the exterior of Bosch products, but this one is impressive enough to consider using over other brands.

Dacor PMOR3021

The PMOR3021 from Dacor is an expensive microwave oven when compared to others with similar features. What sets it apart from the crowd is the option of pairing it with an external blower. Although not necessary for standard installations, this combination is ideal for use with a high-output, professional-style gas range or cooktop. The 600 CFM draw of this duo can handle whatever heat your home chef can put out -- as long as your budget can bear the $1000 price tag.

LG Electronics LMVM2277

A 30-inch model, the LG Electronics LMVM2277 over-the-range microwave oven really caught our eye. It's loaded with unique features such as an EasyUp lift-up door, a professional-looking blue interior, a Glide-N-Turn distribution system, a huge 2.2-cubic-foot interior and unusually powerful 470 CFM ventilation fan. These well thought-out, convenient and functional features prove LG Electronics to be an innovator in this category. We love it!
