Tappan 36-Inch Gas Range TGF657BFB
A lot of range for the money, Tappan's behemoth is one of them most reasonable 36-inch freestanding gas ranges you'll find. In white or bisque, TGF657BFB looks a bit dated -- which it is. But in black and chrome, it's funky and fashionable in a 50s diner sort of way. This model will fit a large space and is appropriate for cooking for a crowd. It's not particularly well built; in fact, we find it a bit on the flimsy side. The other disadvantage is the TGF657BFB's lack of sealed burners. They work just fine, but are a bit of a challenge to keep clean. But unlike some budget ranges, the broiler on this model is located conveniently in the main oven. On the stovetop surface, you can opt for five burners or four burners with a great, big, pancake-friendly griddle. Adaptable to city or country, this range can be fueled by natural gas or propane. For propane, no conversion kit is required. With this model as the focal point, there are plenty of creative ways to put together a sensational kitchen on a limited budget.
Whirlpool 30-Inch Gas Range SF362LXT

The four burners are sealed and easy to clean; the oven is spacious and bakes evenly. Two stovetop burners have a maximum output of 12,500 to 15,000 Btu, giving you the power needed for quick boiling and high-heat tasks such as stir frying. A favorite of new-home builders, the Whirlpool SF362LXT is priced right, attractive and easily available. It comes in black, white, biscuit or stainless steel and is backed by an excellent service organization.
Frigidaire 30-Inch Gas Range FGF337E
Frigidaire's 30-Inch Gas Range FGF337E may have a suggested retail of $549-$699, but we found it readily available for around $400 in white or black and $549 in stainless steel. The sealed burners are easy to clean and an unusual find for a freestanding model in this price range. The major drawback of this gas unit is that it lacks a self-cleaning oven. If you don't anticipate doing a lot of messy baking or roasting and your goal is a fine-looking range at the best possible price, the FGF337E may be just the range you want in your kitchen.
