Top-loading washers may not be making the headlines that front-loading washing machines are, but there is news with the top-loaders as well. Don't assume the expensive, new front-loading washing machines are the only way to go when it comes to energy-efficient, easy-to-use washing machines. A few top-loading models have just as much to offer -- and often at far more affordable prices than the front-loaders. The key to getting the best top-loader for your money is careful shopping. Here are some of the best top-loading washing machines we've reviewed lately, selected for their outstanding features, water and energy efficiency, reliability and value-packed prices.

Fisher & Paykel Eco Smart GWL15 top-loading washer

Selected by Consumer Guide as a Best Buy, the outstanding Fisher & Paykel Eco Smart GWL15 offers easy-to-use automated features and energy efficiency to rival the front-loaders -- all for less than $599. On the GWL15 you will find an enormous stainless-steel basket that you can fill to its 3.7-cubic-foot capacity without worry. This unique model also boasts very low water usage, thanks to the environmentally friendly designs of its innovative New Zealand-based company. With its simple, solid design, the GWL15 offers all the efficiency and convenience settings you could want in a washer, but bypasses much of the new technology that is expensive and possibly vulnerable to failure. Available from respected appliance dealers across the United States, this unit is backed by an extensive service network. Our only concern with the Fisher & Paykel GWL15 is the plastic lid. It feels a bit flimsy, especially when compared to the metal ones we've come to appreciate.

Whirlpool Cabrio WTW6400S top-loader

One of two Cabrio models from Whirlpool, the WTW6400S is the better buy, unless you will miss the see-thru lid and extended soak time. Like the Kenmore Oasis version, the WTW6400S offers a 4.5-cubic-foot interior, top-of-the-line automation and a high spin speed. Cabrio offers a sensor it labels as "6th sense." Sixth sense isn't exactly telepathic, but it does determine washer settings for you. You pick the load type and 6th sense handles the rest -- water level, temperature setting, cycle time and wash/spin speeds. Water usage on the WTW6400S is reasonable, but higher than what you'd find on a typical front-loading washer -- even one that costs a bit less. On the other hand, this Cabrio bears an Energy Star rating and meets or beats the energy efficiency requirements of just about any other top-loader on the market. Compare the Cabrio WTW6400S with the similar Whirlpool-built Oasis models at Sears. Cabrio and Oasis each offer slightly different feature packages, but can be expected to perform very similarly.

Whirlpool WTW5500S top-loading washing machine

A conventionally styled washer, the Whirlpool WTW5500S is priced right, has plenty of sought-after features and offers excellent energy efficiency when compared to other conventional top-loading models. Where it falls down a bit is in its water usage. Although water usage can be controlled with a four-level selector, the WTW5500S doesn't have the automated control that saves water even if you forget to set it -- as on the high-efficiency models. Dispensers for bleach and fabric softener are included and the extra-rinse is a handy feature. We also like the unusual option of a cool wash, in addition to the usual hot, warm or cold. When warm is too warm and cold is just too cold, the WTW5500S offers you an alternative that's just right. Save yourself a bundle and check out this model. You can expect to pay less than $450 for Whirlpool's WTW5500S, a conventional model that indirectly benefits from the new technology of the expense machines.

Frigidaire GLWS1339C top-loading washer

Frigidaire's GLWC1339C offers the most sought-after features in a top-loading washer at a price that's really low. This model includes an optional extra-rinse, an auto soak cycle and both bleach and fabric softener dispensers. The two-speed motor also makes the GLWC1339C a good choice for delicate as well as sturdy fabrics. Resource-conscious shoppers will appreciate the water level adjustment and the 393 kWh/yr energy guide rating. Frigidaire's only shortcoming with this model is the slightly small 3.0-cubic-foot load capacity.

General Electric Super Capacity Washer WDSR2080G top-loader

Budget-conscious shoppers may find General Electric's WDSR2080G to be much to their liking. Simple, practical and functional, this model doesn't have lots of frills and isn't particularly efficient, but it should prove to be very reliable. Best for those who don't plan to wash the most delicate of items, this machine has a 1-speed motor and a bleach dispenser. Eight cycles, simple dials, and a three-level adjustment for water usage round out the package for this budget priced, basic workhorse.
